Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, visited Suriname on 19 September 2026. The visit underscores the commitment of TotalEnergies’ senior leadership to the development of the GranMorgu project in Block 58.
Pouyanné was accompanied by Nicolas Terraz, President, Exploration & Production, and Javier Rielo, Senior Vice President, Exploration & Production Americas. This high-level visit demonstrates the importance the international oil company places on the GranMorgu project, both for TotalEnergies itself and for its partners, Staatsolie and APA Corporation, as well as for Suriname.
During his visit, Pouyanné met with President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and Staatsolie Managing Director Annand Jagesar. A highlight of the visit was a tour of the port, where a significant portion of the logistics activities for GranMorgu takes place. Large components and other materials for the production system are currently stored there. This equipment will ultimately be installed on the seabed for oil production. The President, Pouyanné, and representatives of TotalEnergies and Staatsolie were also briefed on the project's progress.
GranMorgu is steadily taking shape. Construction of the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, fabrication of key components for the offshore installations, and preparations for drilling the production wells are progressing according to schedule. First oil is planned for 2028.
In his remarks, Annand Jagesar said: “We appreciate the professionalism and expertise of TotalEnergies, which are enabling the project to progress according to schedule and within budget. This gives us reassurance and strengthens our confidence in its successful delivery. We look forward to the revenues this project will generate for Suriname, enabling further steps to strengthen the economic resilience of our beautiful country and create a good standard of living for every citizen.”
GranMorgu is also creating economic growth, employment and new opportunities for Surinamese companies. For this reason, both Staatsolie and TotalEnergies are placing strong emphasis on knowledge development among young people, employees and local businesses. More than one hundred Surinamese companies are already supplying goods and services to the project, and the number of Surinamese people involved in the activities continues to grow. Training and development programmes are also being implemented to prepare as many Surinamese people as possible for the opportunities arising from these developments.
A new exploration campaign is planned in Block 58 in 2027 to further investigate the potential of the area surrounding GranMorgu. New discoveries could enable GranMorgu to expand further and generate value for Suriname for many years to come. As a partner with a twenty per cent interest, Staatsolie shares not only in the costs and revenues, but also in the responsibility of ensuring that the project becomes a sustainable success for Suriname.
